Atlanta Oriental Food Recalls Cut Napa Kimchi Because Of Possible Listeria Monocytogenes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – August 17, 2011 – Atlanta Oriental Food Wholesale Company of Atlanta, GA, is recalling its 1 gallon plastic containers of Cut Napa Kimchi and 5 gallon buckets of Cut Napa Kimchi because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recalled Kimchi was distributed at Buford Highway Farmers Market in Doraville, Georgia as well as in five gallon buckets to companies in Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee.

The product comes in a 1 gallon, clear plastic package and a 5 gallon bucket marked with lot # 56090959 on the side of the containers.

The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by the company revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in 1 gallon containers of Cut Napa Kimchi The production of the product has been suspended while FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased 1 gallon containers and 5 gallon buckets of Cut Napa Kimchi with lot # 56090959 are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Tristan Thompson, Monday thru Friday from 10 am to 6 pm at 404-379-3333.

* We believe that none of the products being recalled were processed or offered through the national office.
* We strongly encourage you to notify your agencies within one business day from receipt of this notice.
* ALL cased and uncased inventories, both at the member level and agency level, need to be checked. This product may have entered member and agency warehouses through salvage, local donations, TEFAP, local purchases, retail pickups, food drives, or other avenues.
* For additional local details, please contact the Health Department(s) for the area(s) your food bank serves.

The Atlanta Community Food Bank is asking all of our agencies to take the following steps:

2) Immediately pull and dispose of any items meeting the above description.

If you dispose of the product, please follow any guidelines on the website.

Be mindful that product disposed of through normal methods could get into the hands of anyone who might go through your garbage cans or dumpsters.

There it was,my ticket to the oakhurst garden…..the cpacs van.My friends and I was simply getting into the van and waiting for the teachers who were coming.It was sorta loud when all the girls got in.We were all so excited and filled with excitment!We couldn’t tell what we were going to see on our way.It took sort of a long time for us to get there.While we were waiting to get there,we were talking with our friends and I was talking with 2 of my best friends for life.We were all surprised to see a yard sale filled with crowds of people and chairs,tables,couches,dressers and ect.When we acually got there,there was a woman who introduced us to the oakhurst garden in decatur and she took to the back of the balcony and there were 2 picnic tables and a basket filled with materials for the activity we were about t0 do.The woman introduced herself and the girls’ and I introduced ourselfs.The woman started talked about facts that we can use for our own garden and that we needed to work together.We learned that if you spill yogurt then the yogurt will attract bees to the garden.We all did a activity then the woman took us on a tour.On the tour,we saw a river running through the back and we ate a type of lettuce that was sour and sweet that we can put in our salad.We saw beatiful purple,pink,and blue flowers and they bloomed out great.My friend,My other friend and I saw a stone house and we all thought it was cool!When everyone came back to cpacs we wanted to go back!:)
